Grade: 5
GLO:
(4-5) - Students will recognize that human activity can lead to the production of wastes, and identify alternatives for the responsible use and disposal of materials.
SLO:
Compare different kinds of packaging, and infer the relative advantages and disadvantages of that packaging. In evaluating different forms of packaging, students should demonstrate the ability to consider a consumer perspective as well as an environmental perspective.
ICT Learner Outcomes:
2.1 access and retrieve appropriate information from the Internet by using a specific search path or from given uniform resource locations (URLs)
2.2 use data gathered from a variety of electronic sources to address identified problems
2.1 recognize that graphics, video and sound enhance communication
Description of Activity:
Students will access the website: http://www.recycling-guide.org.uk/ and be able to be more aware of the reasons why recycling is important. The teacher will give them a worksheet to fill out while searching the site. The students can find the answers by clicking on the different recycling categories (school, home, building from recycled products, and how materials are recycled) and reading through the information. The worksheet will be handed in and assessed based on if the answers are complete.
Explanation:
By using technology in this lesson, student will be able to learn of the valuable resources and guides that are available about recycling on the Internet. The use of websites is beneficial in providing great illustrations and diagrams that can be more easily understood by some students who learn better by visual representations. This may also help students to be able to navigate around on the Internet.

Powerpoint Tips
For assignment #2, we had to look at a powerpoint presentation and make some changes to it to try and improve it. The five major changes that I made to the powerpoint presentation were:
1) The original presentation did not have the same colored background on all the slides. I changed to a new theme that was the same through out the whole presentation. I feel that this is important in enabling the viewer or the audience that there is a sense of continuity and that the presentation is all linked together.
2) I placed the title "Crowsnest Pass Wildfire" on all of the slides. This helps the audience to anticipate what the material will be covering on the slides.
3) There were different sizes of fonts on the three slides in the original presentation. It is important that all of the slides in a presentation have the same font, and the same size of font whenever possible. It could be distracting for the audience to see discrepancies in a presentation. Also, it is important to use a font size that can be easily read by the audience; usually the bigger the better.
4) One important aspect of powerpoint presentations is to not use too many words. Simplicity has been found to provide a better experience for the audience. The use of too many words can be distracting and detract from the presentation. In my powerpoint, I cut out lots of the excess words that didn't add anything to the presentation, and I also reworded some things to make the points on the slides simpler.
5) Pictures are important in helping to set the tone or mood for that which will be presented. In the original presentation there were no pictures used to help the audience to connect with the presentation. "A picture says a thousand words", this saying works perfectly for powerpoint presentations where the presenter is trying to convey a message with a very few number of words. Pictures that are relevant to the topic are an effective tool, while at the same time, pictures that don't pertain can take away from the presentation.
Hopefully, I will remember these important facts when I have the opportunity to create presentations in the future.

A Look Into My Life

Hello,
My name is Chad Coppieters. I am currently in PSI at the University of Lethbridge, but I have done other things before I reached this point in my life. I was born and raised just south of Lethbridge in a town called Raymond. I still reside in Raymond because I enjoy the small town life. After graduating from High School, I went to North Carolina for a couple of years and then returned home. I did a couple of years of schooling at Lethbridge Community College, but soon found (what I thought was) good employment working for the Maintenance Department of the Westwind School Division. I enjoyed my time there doing various types of work in many schools across Southern Alberta. After several years I made the decision to go back to school and chose to focus on becoming a teacher.
At the University of Lethbridge my Major is in General Science (Bio., Geog., & Psych.) and I also have a minor in CTS: Community Health. To be completely honest, I enjoy going to school, but wish that our grades were based on attendance rather than tests. That would make school more enjoyable and less stressful. I had a great time in my Ed. 2500 class while working with a grade 3 class at Jennie Emery Elementary school in Coaldale. I found it to be a very valuable experience.
There are some other things that you make like to know about me. I have been married for 7 years and have two children. My oldest, Ivy, is four years old and just started Pre-school and my youngest is Zack, he is 18 months old and quite a hand full. I am also a volunteer member of the Raymond Fire Department and have been there for over eight years. Also, I am a registered member of the Alberta College of Paramedics, and volunteer with the Raymond and District Ambulance Society. These organizations allow me to give back and help the community where I live. I find it to be a very rewarding experience, while at the same time I can continue to grow and learn in other areas of my life beside the things I learn at university.
